What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students ask a question they can answer by observing or exploring. They work with a team, record what happens, and use those observations to explain their findings.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student asks a focused question, follows an agreed plan, and records specific details. The student gives an explanation that matches the team’s observations.
Common Misconceptions
- Some students ask questions that cannot be answered through classroom observation. They may record predictions instead of what they see. They may give an explanation that ignores or contradicts their evidence.
How to Assess It
- Give pairs an ice cube on a metal tray and one on a foam plate. Students write one question, record three observations over five minutes, then explain what happened.

Ways to Teach It
In teams, examine two soil samples with hand lenses, write a question, record observations, and explain one difference using evidence.
Show a photo of a shrinking puddle and ask, “What could we observe to explain what happened?”
Play Question Sort by placing cards under “Can Investigate Here” or “Cannot Investigate Here,” then have students explain each choice.
Track shade on the playground at three times, then use the recorded locations to explain how the shaded area changed.
