What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students turn observations into questions they can test. They plan and carry out investigations, record what happens, and explain results using evidence.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student asks a focused, testable question and follows a fair procedure alone or with a team. The student uses recorded observations to support an explanation.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may ask questions that cannot be tested or change several conditions at once. They may treat a guess as a conclusion or give an explanation that does not match their observations.
How to Assess It
- Use this exit ticket: “A plant near a window bends toward the light. Write a testable question, two investigation steps, and evidence you would collect.”

Ways to Teach It
Give teams two ice cubes, foil, cloth, and paper; have them test which wrapping slows melting and explain results from timed observations.
Ask, “How is a scientific explanation different from a guess?” Students write a response and support it with an example.
Play Testable or Not with question cards; students sort each question, then revise one untestable question into a testable one.
Inspect sunny and shaded schoolyard spots, then test where a wet paper towel dries faster and explain the result from observations.
