What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students make a record of what they observe during a simple investigation. They use drawings, symbols, numbers, or short labels to show results.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students draw observations that match what happened and place them in a clear order. They can use their record to tell what they did and noticed.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may draw what they expected instead of what they observed. They may add unrelated details, leave out changes, or mix up the order of events.
How to Assess It
- Have students observe an ice cube for five minutes, then draw what it looked like at the start and end. Ask them to explain one change.

Ways to Teach It
Place celery in colored water, then have students draw the celery before and after the investigation.
Show two observation drawings and ask, "Which picture gives better evidence, and what details make it useful?"
Play Observation Match by pairing picture records with photographs of plants, weather, shadows, or melting objects.
Have students track the classroom weather for five days using daily drawings of the sky and simple weather symbols.
