What Students Need to Do: Students identify actions animals are born ready to perform and actions developed through experience or training. They explain that some behaviors reflect both heredity and learning.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students can classify spider web building as inherited, responding to a command as learned, and some bird songs as a mix of both. They support each choice with evidence.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think young animals learn every behavior by copying their parents. They may also assume inherited behaviors never change or confuse physical traits with behaviors.
How to Assess It: Give students three examples: a spider building a web, a dog sitting on command, and a young bird refining its song. Ask them to classify and explain each.

Lesson moves

Give groups animal behavior picture cards to sort into inherited, learned, or both, then require one reason for each placement.
Ask students to write: How could heredity and practice both affect a young bird's song?
Play Behavior Charades, where students act out an animal behavior and classmates identify its likely source and explain their reasoning.
Use a dog-training video to identify which responses were taught and which natural behaviors helped the dog learn.
