What Students Need to Do: Students work with one partner to observe, ask questions, count, sort, or record findings. They take turns and combine what each person notices.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student shares materials, listens, and contributes at least one observation. The pair creates one picture or tally record and explains what they found together.
Common Misconceptions: Students may let one partner do all the work or copy an answer without observing. They may argue over materials or report only their own findings.
How to Assess It: Give each pair six classroom objects. Ask them to sort the objects, create one shared picture record, and tell one fact they found together.

Lesson moves

Give pairs leaves and hand lenses, then have them draw two shared observations on one recording sheet.
Ask, “What did your partner notice that you did not?” Have each student answer aloud or with a drawing.
Play an observation relay where partners alternate adding accurate details about a mystery object to one shared chart.
Have pairs survey four classmates about favorite recess activities and record the answers together with tally marks.
