What Students Need to Do: Students share how their group ran an investigation, what they measured, and what they concluded. They identify differences and work toward a shared method or explanation supported by evidence.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can identify procedural differences that may have affected the data. The student uses measurements to defend a conclusion and suggest a fair method for another trial.
Common Misconceptions: Students may assume different results mean one group failed or that all groups must collect identical data. They may ignore differences in variables, sample size, or tools. They may treat negotiation as voting rather than revising ideas with evidence.
How to Assess It: Give students two reports from the same pendulum test that used different string lengths. Ask them to explain the likely effect and propose one shared method for a repeat test.

Lesson moves

Give teams identical paper helicopters to test, then post each drop method, trial data, and claim for a gallery comparison.
Ask, “Why might two careful groups get different results, and which explanation does the evidence support?”
Play Evidence Match, where teams pair method cards, data tables, and conclusions, then challenge weak matches.
Compare two weather apps' rainfall measurements and decide whether location, timing, or tools explain the difference.
