What Students Need to Do: Students collect and record data about the same object or event, then compare their results with other groups. They suggest reasonable causes for differences, such as tool placement, timing, procedure, or recording errors.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can identify where group results match and where they differ. The student can use details from the investigation to explain a difference without assuming another group was simply wrong.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think every group must get identical results or that any different result is incorrect. They may blame the tool without considering how it was placed, read, timed, or recorded.
How to Assess It: Give students two groups’ plant heights, 14 cm and 16 cm. Ask, “Name one possible reason for the difference and one step that could make the next measurements more consistent.”

Lesson moves

Have teams measure the same cup of water with matching thermometers, compare readings, and check placement and wait time.
Ask students to write: “Why might careful scientists using the same tool record different results?”
Play Explanation Match by pairing result cards with cause cards such as different timing, viewing angle, tool placement, or recording error.
Compare two local weather reports, then discuss how location, measurement time, and sensor placement could produce different temperatures.
