What Students Need to Do: Students compare observations and measurements collected by different groups using tools such as rulers, balances, thermometers, and hand lenses. They identify differences and suggest reasonable causes, including tool choice, technique, units, or sample variation.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students organize group results in a table and clearly describe where the results agree or differ. They use evidence to explain likely causes rather than assuming one group is wrong.
Common Misconceptions: Students may expect every group to get identical results or treat any difference as a mistake. They may overlook different units, tool precision, measuring points, or natural differences among samples.
How to Assess It: Give students three groups' plant height measurements collected with different rulers. Ask them to identify one difference and write one likely reason for it.

Lesson moves

Have groups measure the same classroom object with rulers and metersticks, then compare results and identify causes of variation.
Ask students to explain in writing why two groups might record different temperatures for the same cup of water.
Play Measurement Detective by giving teams mismatched data cards and asking them to find the tool or technique causing each difference.
Compare weather readings from two nearby stations and discuss how location, time, and instruments could produce different results.
