What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use matching tools and follow the same steps to observe an object or event. They compare group records, naming what matches and what differs. They describe possible reasons for small differences.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can place two groups’ data side by side and identify agreements and differences. The student checks units, tool use, and recording methods before drawing a conclusion. Small differences are treated as evidence to examine, not automatically as mistakes.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may expect every group to record identical results. They may compare numbers without checking units or assume one group must be wrong. Some confuse an observation with an opinion or explanation.
How to Assess It
- Give students two group tables showing three temperature readings. Ask: “Name one match, one difference, and one possible reason for the difference.”

Ways to Teach It
Have pairs measure the same pencil with identical rulers, post their results, and compare the class measurements.
Show two groups’ plant observations and ask students to write what matches, what differs, and why.
Play a card sort where students match observation records, then flag differences in measurements, units, or tool use.
Compare daily weather readings from two classroom teams using the same thermometer and discuss why the readings may vary.
