What Students Need to Do: Students examine classmates’ procedures, materials, measurements, and findings. They identify similarities and differences, then explain how method choices may have affected the results.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students make accurate side-by-side comparisons using details from both investigation records. They explain whether the results agree and give a reasonable cause for any differences.
Common Misconceptions: Students may compare only the final results and ignore the methods. They may assume different results mean someone made a mistake, even when groups used different materials, steps, or measurements.
How to Assess It: Give students two short investigation records and ask: “Name one method difference, compare the results, and explain how the method difference may have affected them.”

Lesson moves

In teams, test paper towel absorbency, exchange investigation sheets, and highlight two method similarities, two differences, and one result comparison.
After reading two group records, write which method difference best explains the result gap and support your answer with evidence.
Race to sort mixed cards into Method A, Method B, Result A, and Result B, then check with a partner.
Compare classmates’ tests of two soil types, then recommend one for a class garden using method and result evidence.
