What Students Need to Do: Students examine results from an investigation and compare ways to represent the pattern, such as graphs, diagrams, physical models, or equations. They choose the model that best fits the evidence and explain why it is useful.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students choose a model that clearly shows the relationship between tested variables. They support their choice with specific data and identify one limit of the model.
Common Misconceptions: Students may choose the most colorful or detailed model instead of the one that best shows the data pattern. They may treat a model as an exact copy or assume one model works for every question.
How to Assess It: Give students a small data table on ramp height and toy car distance. Ask them to choose a graph, diagram, or equation and justify their choice using two data points.

Lesson moves

Test paper helicopters with different wing lengths, record fall times, then choose a graph or diagram that best shows the results.
Show one data set as a table, line graph, and bar graph, then ask: Which model best reveals the pattern, and why?
Play Model Match by pairing investigation cards with graph, diagram, physical model, or equation cards and defending each match.
Compare a weather forecast map with actual temperatures, then discuss how the model helps and where its predictions fall short.
