What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students identify details in stories, cartoons, and pictures that are make-believe. They compare those details with what real plants and animals look like and do.

What Mastery Looks Like

Given an image or short scene, a student can label a trait or action as real or make-believe. The student gives a simple reason, such as, “Real dogs do not read books.”

Common Misconceptions

Students may think talking animals, walking trees, or smiling flowers behave that way because they saw it on a screen. They may also call unusual real traits make-believe, such as a Venus flytrap catching insects.

How to Assess It

Show a rabbit eating grass and a rabbit driving a car. Ask, “Which could happen in real life, and how do you know?”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs picture cards showing animals and plants, then have students sort them into “real” and “make-believe” hoops.

  2. Read one page from an animal story and ask, “What could this animal really do, and what is pretend?”

  3. Play Real or Pretend by naming actions while students hold up an R card or a P card.

  4. Observe a class plant for several days, then compare its real changes with a cartoon plant that talks or walks.
