What Students Need to Do: Students identify how actions by plants, animals, and people change habitats, resources, or other living things. They explain each impact as a clear cause-and-effect relationship.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students can name what caused an environmental change and describe the result. They can explain whether an impact helps, harms, or has mixed effects using evidence from a scenario.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think only humans affect the environment or that every impact is harmful. They may confuse an environmental change, such as erosion, with the organism action that caused it. They may also name an effect without explaining the cause.
How to Assess It: Give an exit ticket showing a beaver building a dam and people removing trees. Ask students to name one environmental effect of each action and label it helpful, harmful, or mixed.

Lesson moves

Place two hula hoops on trampled and untrampled grass, then have groups count plants and record differences.
Ask students to write how planting native flowers could affect insects, birds, soil, and people in the area.
Play a card sort matching organism actions, such as burrowing or littering, with their likely environmental effects.
Map where rain carries trash from the school grounds, then identify how that runoff could affect a nearby pond or stream.
