What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify Earth resources people use for food, energy, shelter, and products. They classify each resource as renewable or nonrenewable and explain how quickly nature replaces it.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students correctly classify examples such as sunlight, trees, coal, oil, and minerals. They connect each resource to a human use and justify the classification using replacement time.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think renewable means unlimited or replaced immediately. They may also assume anything recyclable is renewable, or that all natural resources can be replaced quickly.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Sort sunlight, trees, coal, and copper into renewable and nonrenewable groups, then name one human use and explain each choice.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups resource picture cards to sort, then have them add a human use and estimated replacement time to each card.
Ask students to write: Why can a renewable resource still run out in one place? Use trees or freshwater as evidence.
Play Resource Relay, where teams place named resources under renewable or nonrenewable headings and earn points for accurate explanations.
Conduct a classroom resource audit by listing items made from wood, metal, plastic, or glass and tracing each material to Earth.
