What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students match plants and animals to places that provide food, water, air, shelter, space, and sunlight. They explain why an organism can survive in one place but not another.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students correctly place an organism in a suitable habitat and name the needs met there. They use habitat details to explain why another location would not work.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think any animal can live anywhere if food is available. They may confuse a habitat with a home or overlook plants' needs for water, air, space, and sunlight.
How to Assess It
- Show a camel, frog, and polar bear with desert, pond, and Arctic habitat cards. Students match each animal and write one need its habitat meets.

Ways to Teach It
Build shoebox habitats for toy animals, adding labeled sources of food, water, shelter, air, and space.
Ask students to write: Why could a frog live near a pond but not in a dry sandbox?
Play Habitat Match by pairing organism cards with habitat cards, then earning a point for naming two needs the habitat meets.
Walk around the schoolyard, record three living things, and identify where each finds water, shelter, space, or sunlight.
