What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify the survival needs shared by plants, animals, and humans, such as water, air, energy, and a suitable place to live. They compare how each living thing meets those needs.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can name needs shared by a plant, an animal, and a human. The student can also explain differences, such as plants using sunlight while animals eat food.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may say plants eat soil or that sunlight is plant food. They may also confuse wants, such as toys or treats, with needs required for survival.
How to Assess It
- Give an exit ticket showing a tree, a rabbit, and a child. Ask students to name two shared needs and explain one difference in how they meet a need.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs plant, animal, human, and need cards, then have them match the cards and circle needs shared by all three.
Ask, “How do a sunflower and a child meet the same need in different ways?” Students answer using water, air, or energy.
Play Survival Needs Bingo by calling clues such as “helps a plant make sugar” or “keeps an animal from drying out.”
Observe a schoolyard plant and animal, then record where each gets water, air, energy, and a suitable place to live.
