What Students Need to Do: Students observe plants, animals, and people and identify the air, water, food, and space each one needs. They use details from a picture, habitat, or real organism to explain where those needs are met.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can look at a habitat and point out how each living thing gets all four needs. The student can explain what might happen when one need is missing.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think plants get food from soil, rather than making it using light, air, and water. They may think fish do not need air because they live underwater. They may treat space as a house or nest only, rather than room to live and grow.
How to Assess It: Show four pictures: a wilted plant in dry soil, a child holding their breath underwater, an empty bird feeder, and crowded seedlings. Students match each picture to water, air, food, or space and explain one match.

Lesson moves

Build mini habitats in trays with animal figures, cups of water, food pictures, open air, and enough room, then label each need.
Discuss the prompt, 'How do a duck and a child meet the same needs in different ways?' then draw one comparison.
Play Needs Match: draw an organism card, collect all four need cards, and explain how the organism meets each need.
Walk the schoolyard, choose one living thing, and sketch where it gets air, water, food, and space.
