What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify plant and animal traits that help organisms survive in particular environments. They compare physical features, behaviors, and life cycle patterns, then explain how each provides an advantage.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given two organisms, students can name their adaptations and connect each one to an environmental challenge. They can describe a clear similarity and difference using evidence.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may call every body part or behavior an adaptation without explaining its benefit. They may think organisms choose adaptations during their lifetimes or that all adaptations are physical features.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: A cactus stores water and a black bear hibernates. Classify each adaptation, explain its benefit, and give one similarity or difference.
