What Students Need to Do: Students identify cues such as temperature, daylight, and rainfall, then connect them to changes in living things. They explain examples such as migration, dormancy, flowering, or leaf loss.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students correctly match a seasonal change with a plant or animal response. They use observations to explain why the response helps the organism survive or reproduce.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think every animal migrates or hibernates during winter. They may think trees that lose leaves are dead, or that all places have the same seasonal patterns.
How to Assess It: Give students pictures of a bare tree and migrating birds. Ask them to name the seasonal response shown and explain what change may have triggered it.

Lesson moves

Give groups cards showing buds, falling leaves, migration, hibernation, and nesting, then have them build and explain a four-season sequence.
Students answer the prompt, “How might a shorter day change what a plant or animal does?” using one claim and two examples.
Play Seasonal Response Match: students pair organism cards with response cards, then earn a point by explaining why each pairing fits.
Use a weekly schoolyard photo log to track one tree, one plant, and one animal sign as weather and daylight change.
