What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Given a changed habitat, students identify which existing traits provide an advantage. They predict likely outcomes for individuals and support each prediction with evidence.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given a drought, flood, fire, or temperature shift, a student can name a trait that helps an organism in that setting. The student explains why individuals with that trait are more likely to get resources, avoid danger, and produce offspring.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may say an organism develops a needed trait because its habitat changed. They may assume only the biggest or strongest survive, or that every member of a species has identical traits. They may also treat moving away as the same as dying.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: “A drought leaves mostly large, hard seeds. Birds of one species have different beak sizes. Predict which birds are more likely to reproduce, and state what may happen to the others.”
Lesson moves
Ways to Teach It
Give groups spoons, tweezers, and clothespins as beaks; collect mixed seeds, remove small seeds, then compare which beaks meet a food target.
Have students answer the prompt, “Does a changed environment create helpful traits, or favor traits already present?” using evidence from a drought scenario.
Play a card sort where students match organism trait cards to flood, drought, cold, and fire cards, then label likely outcomes.
Compare photos of Florida beach mice on pale dunes and darker inland soil, then explain how fur color may affect predator risk.
