What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use photos, observations, weather records, or wildlife data to identify how plants and animals change through the year. They compare Florida examples with examples from colder, drier, or more mountainous regions. They explain how differences in climate relate to migration, dormancy, leaf loss, flowering, or breeding.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can name a seasonal change in a Florida organism and compare it with the same type of change elsewhere. The student uses specific evidence, such as temperature data, rainfall, leaf color, flowering time, or animal movement.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think Florida has no seasons because winters are mild. They may assume all trees lose their leaves, all birds migrate, or every region changes at the same time. They may also confuse an organism's seasonal response with its permanent traits.
How to Assess It
- Give students one Florida photo pair and one northern-state photo pair from summer and winter. Ask them to name one similarity, one difference, and evidence from each pair.

Sort season-labeled photo cards of Florida and Maine organisms, then place them on a Venn diagram to show shared and different changes.
Write: How would a Florida oak and a Maine maple look or behave differently from fall through winter, and why?
Play Seasonal Match-Up by pairing organism cards with change cards, such as migration, flowering, leaf drop, or dormancy, and defend each match.
Compare monthly temperatures and local wildlife sightings with Minnesota records, then explain how climate patterns affect one plant and one animal.
