What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students observe and record weather over days and seasons. They compare temperature and precipitation data, then describe patterns that change and repeat over time. They use observations to support what they notice.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can read a simple weather calendar or graph and compare two days or seasons. The student identifies a repeating pattern, such as warmer summer temperatures or wetter months, and points to data as evidence.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat one hot or rainy day as proof of a seasonal pattern. They may confuse weather with season, or think a repeating pattern means conditions happen in an exact order. Some focus on temperature and ignore precipitation.
How to Assess It
- Give students a chart showing temperature and rainfall for four seasons across two years. Ask them to identify one repeating pattern and support it with two observations.

Measure outdoor temperature and observe clouds for five days, then add symbols to a class weather calendar and circle any repeating pattern.
Show two weeks of weather pictures and ask students to write what repeats, what changes, and which observations support their claim.
