What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use maps and weather data to explain how the jet stream and ocean currents affect conditions in a specific place. They connect each pattern to measured changes in temperature, pressure, wind, humidity, or precipitation.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given a current map and local weather data, students can make a supported forecast for a named location. They cite map evidence and predict changes in at least three weather measurements.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think ocean currents affect only the water, or that the jet stream creates storms instead of steering air masses. They may confuse wind direction with storm movement or make claims without using measurements.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Give students a map showing a jet stream dip and nearby ocean currents. Ask them to predict three weather measurements for one labeled city and cite map evidence.

Place thermometers above trays of warm and cold water, record air temperatures, and connect the results to coastal ocean currents.
Ask students to explain how moving the jet stream north or south could change their town's temperature, wind, and precipitation.
