What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify natural things they see on the ground, such as ponds, stones, dirt, plants, and animals. They tell which examples are living and which are nonliving.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can point to examples in a picture or outdoors and name them correctly. They can sort several examples into water, rock, soil, and living thing groups.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think living things include animals but not plants. They may confuse human-made objects with natural materials or think water is found only in oceans.
How to Assess It
- Show a picture containing a pond, stones, bare ground, a tree, and a bird. Ask students to label each item and circle the living things.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs a tray with a rock, cup of soil, leaf, and water bag, then have them name each item.
Show a playground photo and ask, “Which parts came from nature, and which are living?” Students explain one choice.
Play four-corner picture sort: water, rock, soil, or living thing; students move to the matching corner and name the clue.
Walk around school with clipboards; students sketch one living thing and two nonliving natural materials they find on the ground.
