What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students connect specific human actions to measurable changes in land, water, and air. They use evidence to explain cause-and-effect chains and separate direct effects from later consequences.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can examine a photo, map, or data table and name the human action and resulting environmental change. The explanation links visible or measured evidence to the identified impact.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may assume all erosion and climate shifts are caused by people. They may confuse deforestation with desertification, or overlook how pavement increases runoff and changes water flow.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: "A town replaces 20 acres of forest with roads and parking lots. Name two likely changes to soil or water, and explain each."

Pour equal cups of water over two soil trays, one bare and one covered with grass, then compare runoff and sediment.
Show paired aerial photos of a growing city and ask students to write three evidence-based claims about environmental changes.
