What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students compare a model with the real object or event it represents. They identify details the model shows, leaves out, or represents inaccurately.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given a diagram, globe, or physical model, a student can name one useful feature and one limitation. The student can explain why observations may not match the model exactly.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think a model is a perfect copy or includes every detail. They may also think a model is useless if any part differs from observations.
How to Assess It
- Show students a globe and a photograph of Earth from space. Ask them to name one accurate feature of the globe and one limitation.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs a globe and Earth photographs; students place sticky notes on features the globe shows accurately and details it leaves out.
Write: How is a toy animal useful as a model, and what can it not show about a living animal?
Play Model Detective with diagram and photo cards; teams earn a point for naming one match and one missing or inaccurate detail.
Compare a weather forecast map with the next day's observed weather, then list where the model matched and where it differed.
