What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify objects, drawings, maps, and simulations as representations of real things or systems. They explain what each representation shows and how it can answer a question.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can match a model to the object or process it represents. The student can name one useful feature and one way the model differs from the real thing.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think a model must be a small physical copy or must look exactly like the real thing. They may treat every feature as accurate and miss that models leave out details.
How to Assess It
- Show students a water cycle diagram. Ask, "What does this model help explain, and what is one thing it does not show accurately?"
Lesson moves
Ways to Teach It
Build a playground model with blocks, then label which parts represent real equipment and which details were left out.
Display a globe and ask, "How is it useful for studying Earth, and how is it different from Earth?"
Play Model Match with cards showing real objects, diagrams, maps, and replicas, then have teams explain each match.
Use a local weather map and identify what its colors and symbols tell families about tomorrow's conditions.
