What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students explain how models help people represent, study, and predict things that are difficult to observe directly. They also identify where a model leaves out details, changes scale, or relies on assumptions.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can examine a diagram, physical model, simulation, or equation and name a specific use and limitation. They support each claim with evidence from the model.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think a good model must be an exact copy of the real object or system. They may also treat models as proven facts or assume one model works for every purpose.

How to Assess It

Show students a diagram of the water cycle. Ask them to write one way the diagram helps explain the cycle and one detail it cannot show accurately.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Build a clay cell model, then attach two labels showing what it represents well and two labels showing what it leaves out.

  2. Discuss this prompt: Which is more useful for planning a trip, a road map or a globe, and what does each omit?

  3. Sort model cards into physical, visual, mathematical, and computer groups, then earn points by naming one use and one limitation for each.

  4. Compare a weather forecast map with the next day's weather, then identify how the model helped and where its prediction differed.
