What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify observations and measurements that support a scientific explanation. They explain how the evidence supports the idea and separate evidence from opinions or guesses.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can choose relevant evidence from investigation results and connect it to a claim. The student can also explain why unrelated facts do not support the claim.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat any statement from a scientist as evidence. They may confuse opinions with observations or choose evidence that mentions the topic but does not support the claim.
How to Assess It
- Give students the claim, “Light helps bean plants grow,” with four observation cards. Ask them to choose the two strongest evidence cards and explain each choice.

Ways to Teach It
Grow bean seedlings in light and darkness, record daily measurements, then use the data to explain any growth differences.
Ask students to write which evidence best supports a claim about melting ice and explain why it fits.
Play Evidence Sort by having teams place observation cards under “supports,” “does not support,” or “need more information.”
Compare two weather forecasts with their maps and measurements, then decide which forecast has stronger evidence.
