What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students ask questions about another person's scientific claim, evidence, and explanation. They discuss whether the evidence supports the claim and suggest ways to check it.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can identify the evidence behind a claim and ask a relevant question about it. The student can explain how repeating a test or comparing results helps scientists check ideas.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think scientists always agree, or that disagreement means someone failed. They may accept a claim because many people believe it, rather than checking the evidence.
How to Assess It
- Give students a claim that a paper towel brand absorbs the most water, supported by one trial. Ask them to write two questions scientists should ask before accepting the claim.

Ways to Teach It
Groups test which paper towel absorbs most, exchange results, question each group's method, and repeat one test to check the evidence.
Ask students to write: Why might a scientist want another scientist to question an explanation?
Play Evidence Checker, where teams earn points by spotting missing measurements, unclear steps, or unsupported claims on experiment cards.
Show a simple weather forecast and discuss how meteorologists compare measurements and question predictions before sharing them with the public.
