What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students examine brief biographies of scientists and identify differences in their cultures, education, skills, interests, and career goals. They explain how varied experiences can support scientific work.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can compare several scientists without relying on stereotypes. They use facts from biographies to explain how different talents or experiences shaped each person’s contributions.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may picture scientists as only men in white lab coats or assume all scientists work in laboratories. They may also think every scientist follows the same education path or needs identical talents.
How to Assess It
- Give students profiles of three scientists and ask: “Name two differences in their backgrounds or talents, then explain how one difference supported their work.”
