What Students Need to Do: Students propose different ways to investigate the same question. They choose materials and procedures while keeping the test fair and the results measurable.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can design an original test that answers a clear question. The student identifies what changes, what is measured, and what stays the same.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think creativity means making up results or changing several variables at once. They may believe every question has one correct procedure or requires special equipment.
How to Assess It: Exit ticket: Describe a creative but fair way to test which of three paper towel brands absorbs the most water. Name what changes, what is measured, and what stays the same.

Lesson moves

Give teams foil, pennies, and water, then have them design and revise a fair test for which boat shape holds the most pennies.
Students answer the prompt: How can two scientists test the same question in different valid ways?
Use scenario cards and have teams race to sketch a test, naming the changed, measured, and controlled variables.
Plan two ways a gardener could test whether the amount of sunlight affects bean plant growth.
