What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students collect and combine repeated observations of a natural event. They use that body of evidence to support an explanation and separate observed facts from conclusions.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can identify which statements are observations and which are explanations. They can cite several observations from a data set and explain how those observations support a conclusion.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat one observation, a personal opinion, or a prediction as sufficient evidence. They may also confuse an explanation with the measurements and observations used to support it.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Four weekly pond counts found 12, 10, 7, and 5 frogs. State the evidence, give a supported explanation, and tell why all four observations matter.
