What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students make claims about how something works, then support each claim with observations or measurements. They separate evidence that can be checked from guesses, opinions, and unsupported explanations.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can name a testable question, identify relevant evidence, and explain how the evidence supports a claim. The student can also revise a claim when results do not support it.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat a confident opinion or something read online as evidence. They may list observations without linking them to a claim. They may also suggest tests that cannot produce observable or measurable results.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: A plant near a window grew 4 centimeters, while a plant in a dark cabinet grew 1 centimeter. Write one claim and explain how the measurements support it.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs toy cars, ramps, and rulers to test whether ramp height affects travel distance, then require a claim supported by measurements.
Ask students to write about why the statement "heavier objects always fall faster" needs test results before it can be accepted.
Play an evidence sort game using cards labeled observation, measurement, opinion, prediction, and unsupported claim.
Compare two weather forecasts with the next day's recorded weather, then discuss which forecast had stronger evidence and why.
