What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students explain that an atom is the smallest piece that still represents an element. They identify protons and neutrons in the nucleus and electrons around it.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can draw and label a basic atom model. They correctly place each subatomic particle and explain how the nucleus differs from the whole atom.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think the nucleus is the whole atom or that electrons are inside the nucleus. They may confuse atoms with molecules or believe atoms have no smaller parts.
How to Assess It
- Give students an unlabeled atom diagram. Ask them to label the nucleus, proton, neutron, and electron, then describe where each particle is found.

Ways to Teach It
Build atom models using clay for protons and neutrons, beads for electrons, and pipe cleaners to show the space around the nucleus.
Ask students to write: How can an atom be an element's smallest unit if it contains smaller particles?
Run a card sort matching proton, neutron, and electron cards with their correct locations and basic properties.
Examine aluminum foil and discuss how dividing it into smaller pieces eventually reaches single aluminum atoms.
