What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students compare Solar System objects with Earth using data about gravity, temperature, atmosphere, distance, and motion. They explain similarities and differences with evidence from tables, graphs, or models.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can read a data table and make accurate comparisons between Earth, the Sun, planets, and moons. They can explain how distance, atmosphere, gravity, rotation, and orbit affect conditions on each object.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think moons have no gravity or that every planet has an atmosphere like Earth's. They may assume distance from the Sun alone determines temperature, or that all planets orbit at the same speed.
How to Assess It
- Give students data for Earth, Venus, and the Moon. Ask them to write two comparisons and explain which place has conditions most unlike Earth using two data points.
