What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students build and use models that show the Sun’s layers, rotation, and energy movement by convection. They represent sunspots, solar flares, and prominences, then explain what each part means.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A strong model places the core, radiative zone, convection zone, photosphere, chromosphere, and corona in the correct order. The student shows rotation and convection, and clearly distinguishes sunspots, flares, and prominences.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often treat the Sun as solid, confuse rotation with revolution, or think convection occurs in every layer. They may use sunspot, flare, and prominence interchangeably, or assume dark sunspots are holes.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Draw a labeled Sun model with its layers, rotation arrows, one convection loop, a sunspot, a solar flare, and a prominence.

Ways to Teach It
Build a cutaway Sun with colored clay, yarn convection loops, and arrow flags for rotation, then add paper sunspots, flares, and prominences.
Show three NASA solar images and ask, “Which feature is visible, and what evidence supports your identification?”
Run a card sort matching layer names, feature images, motion diagrams, and descriptions, then have pairs defend two matches.
Read a short space weather alert and have students explain how a flare could affect radio communication or satellites.
