What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students distinguish stars, galaxies, and the universe by scale. They explain that the Milky Way is one galaxy among an immense number of galaxies.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students correctly place stars inside galaxies and galaxies inside the universe in a diagram. They use the word "billions" to describe both scales without confusing galaxies with solar systems.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think the universe and the Milky Way are the same thing. They may also confuse a galaxy with a solar system or assume every point of light is a separate galaxy.

How to Assess It

Give students the terms star, galaxy, and universe. Ask them to draw and label a nested model, then add where "billions" applies.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Use beads, cups, and a large box to build a nested model of stars inside galaxies inside the universe.

  2. Ask students to write three sentences explaining why the Milky Way is not the entire universe.

  3. Play a card sort with images and labels for planets, stars, solar systems, galaxies, and the universe.

  4. Show a deep-field space image, count visible galaxies in one section, and discuss what that small view suggests about the whole sky.
