What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students compare space distances using kilometers, astronomical units, and light-years. They use light travel time and spacecraft speeds to explain the scale of those distances.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can explain that a light-year measures distance, not time. Given a distance in light-years, the student can state how long its light travels and compare that with spacecraft travel.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often treat a light-year as a unit of time. They may think telescope images show objects as they are now, or that spacecraft travel near light speed.
How to Assess It
- Ask: “A star is 10 light-years away. How long does its light take to reach Earth, and why would a spacecraft take much longer?”

Ways to Teach It
Place Earth and the Sun 1 centimeter apart, then calculate where Proxima Centauri would be on the same scale.
Write a short response explaining why looking at a distant galaxy is also looking into the past.
Sort distance cards into kilometers, astronomical units, or light-years, then defend each choice with a partner.
Compare Voyager 1 at 17 kilometers per second with light at 300,000 kilometers per second, then calculate their speed ratio.
