The Standard

Recognize that heat flow and movement of material within Earth causes earthquakes and volcanic eruptions, and creates mountains and ocean basins.

What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students connect heat inside Earth to the slow movement of mantle material and tectonic plates. They explain how plate movement produces earthquakes, volcanoes, mountains, and ocean basins.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can use a diagram to trace a cause-and-effect chain from internal heat to changes at Earth’s surface. They can match plate movements with likely landforms and geologic events.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think the entire mantle is liquid or that earthquakes make plates move. They may also assume every plate boundary produces the same features and hazards.

How to Assess It

Give students a plate boundary diagram and ask: “How can heat inside Earth lead to two surface features or events shown here?” Require a labeled cause-and-effect chain.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Heat colored water in a clear container, add cooler water, and have students sketch the circulation as a model of mantle movement.

  2. Ask students to write how one internal heat source can eventually produce both a mountain range and an earthquake.

  3. Play a boundary card sort matching convergent, divergent, and transform movements with earthquakes, volcanoes, mountains, and ocean basins.

  4. Use a world map of plate boundaries to compare the locations of recent earthquakes, volcanoes, mountain ranges, and ocean basins.
