What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify which object transfers thermal energy and which object receives it. They predict and describe how each object's temperature changes when warmer and cooler materials touch.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students correctly show energy moving from the warmer object to the cooler object. They use temperature measurements to explain why one object cools while the other warms.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think cold moves into a warm object or that thermal energy can move equally in both directions. They may also confuse temperature with the amount of thermal energy transferred.
How to Assess It
- Give students a picture of a warm spoon placed in cold water. Ask them to draw an arrow showing energy transfer and predict each temperature change.

Ways to Teach It
Place sealed bags of warm and cool water together, then record both temperatures every minute for five minutes.
Ask students to explain why an ice cube melts faster in a hand than on a cold plate.
Play an arrow-card game where students point from the warmer pictured object toward the cooler pictured object.
Compare a hot drink left on a table with soup placed in a refrigerator, and explain each temperature change.
