The Standard
Identify and investigate the general functions of the major systems of the human body (digestive, respiratory, circulatory, reproductive, excretory, immune, nervous, and musculoskeletal) and describe ways these systems interact with each other to maintain homeostasis.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students explain the main job of each major body system and use simple observations or models to investigate how systems work. They trace how two or more systems respond together to changes such as exercise, illness, eating, or heat.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can match each body system with its main organs and function. Given a situation, the student can explain how systems interact to keep conditions such as temperature, oxygen, water, and nutrients within healthy ranges.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat body systems as separate units or think homeostasis means conditions never change. They often confuse excretion with removing solid digestive waste, and respiration with breathing only. Some may assume the reproductive system is needed for an individual's daily survival rather than continuation of the species.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit prompt: “After running for five minutes, breathing rate and heart rate increase. Explain how the respiratory, circulatory, nervous, and musculoskeletal systems work together.”

Ways to Teach It
Measure pulse and breathing rate before and after one minute of movement, then graph the changes and explain which systems caused them.
Write a response to: “How do at least three body systems help you recover after running on a hot day?”
Play a card-matching relay using organ cards, system cards, function cards, and interaction cards, requiring students to justify every completed set.
Analyze a sports drink label and explain how the digestive, circulatory, excretory, and nervous systems help maintain water and salt balance.
