What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students match weather and sunlight hazards with actions that reduce injury. They explain why sheltering indoors, following alerts, wearing sunscreen, and seeking shade lower risk.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given a scenario, students choose a safe response and justify it using the hazard involved. They distinguish correct actions for lightning, tornadoes, hurricanes, extreme heat, and ultraviolet radiation.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think every building or outdoor shelter is safe during severe weather. They may shelter under trees during lightning or stand near windows during tornadoes. Some assume clouds block ultraviolet radiation or sunscreen provides complete protection all day.
How to Assess It
- Use this exit ticket: A thunderstorm begins during soccer practice, and the UV index is 9. List two immediate actions and explain how each lowers risk.

Give groups a backpack and item cards, then have them pack six supplies for a hurricane and defend each choice.
