What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students explain how planning ahead can keep people safe during dangerous weather. They name sensible steps, such as checking alerts, finding safe shelter, and gathering supplies.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can match a weather hazard with safe preparation steps. The student can explain how each step lowers the chance of injury or harm.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think lightning is only dangerous during heavy rain or that standing under a tree is safe. They may also think every weather event requires the same safety steps.

How to Assess It

Use this exit ticket: “The forecast says a strong thunderstorm may arrive tomorrow. Write two ways your family can prepare and explain why one helps.”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups a bag of household items and have them choose six items for an emergency supply kit.

  2. Ask students to write: “Why should a family prepare before a storm begins?” Then share answers with a partner.

  3. Play a card sort where students match weather events, safe actions, and unsafe actions.

  4. Have students take home a simple checklist and identify their family’s safe room, emergency contact, and weather alert source.
