What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify parts of the geosphere, hydrosphere, cryosphere, atmosphere, and biosphere in a scene or event. They use labeled arrows and cause-and-effect statements to show how changes move between systems.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given an event such as a hurricane or melting glacier, students correctly label the systems involved and explain several interactions. They distinguish frozen water from liquid water and living things from their physical surroundings.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat frozen water as separate from Earth's water or place all water in the hydrosphere without naming the cryosphere. They may also describe each system alone or assume interactions move in only one direction.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Draw a melting glacier and label at least four Earth systems. Add three arrows and explain what each arrow shows.

Build a tray model with soil, ice, water, a plant, and moving air, then record three observed interactions.
