What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify how heat moves in examples from the atmosphere, oceans, and land. They distinguish energy traveling as waves, passing through direct contact, and moving with circulating fluids.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students correctly classify an unfamiliar heat-transfer example and explain the evidence for their choice. They can show that radiation needs no matter, conduction needs contact, and convection occurs in fluids.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think all heat transfer is convection or that radiation only involves nuclear materials. They often say heat rises, instead of explaining that warmer, less dense fluids rise.
How to Assess It
- Give students three scenarios: sunlight warming soil, soil warming nearby air, and warm air rising. Ask them to name and justify each mechanism.

Ways to Teach It
Run three stations: feel lamp warmth, track heat along a metal spoon in warm water, and observe colored warm water circulating.
Ask students to explain why sand, ocean water, and air warm differently during a sunny day.
