The Standard
Compare and contrast the function of organs and other physical structures of plants and animals, including humans, for example: some animals have skeletons for support -- some with internal skeletons others with exoskeletons -- while some plants have stems for support.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify how organs and body structures help plants and animals get resources, move, stay supported, and remain protected. They compare structures by function, not only by appearance.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can explain that different structures can do a similar job, such as a stem and a skeleton providing support. They can distinguish structures with different functions and support their comparisons with accurate examples.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think every animal has bones, or that an exoskeleton is a second skeleton outside the body. They may treat plant stems only as water tubes and miss their support role. They may also assume similar-looking parts always do the same job.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: "How do a beetle's exoskeleton and a bean plant's stem do a similar job, and how are they different?" Require one similarity and one difference.
Lesson moves
Ways to Teach It
Give pairs celery stalks, leaves, feathers, and clean shells to observe, then have them label each structure and infer its job.
Ask students to write: How are a plant root and an animal mouth alike and different in helping an organism get resources?
Play a card match where students pair structure cards with function cards, then defend one match before keeping the pair.
On a schoolyard walk, photograph one plant structure and one animal structure, then create a caption comparing the jobs they perform.
