What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students connect Earth's daily spin to the repeating pattern of day and night. They use models or diagrams to explain why the Sun, Moon, and stars seem to move across the sky.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can use a globe and light source to show a location moving into and out of sunlight. They can connect sunrise, sunset, and changing sky positions to Earth's rotation.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often say the Sun circles Earth each day or confuse rotation with Earth's yearly orbit. They may think night happens because the Sun turns off or goes behind the Moon. Some assume the Moon is never visible during daytime and stars vanish at sunrise.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Draw Earth rotating beside the Sun, label day and night, and explain why the Sun appears to cross the sky.
Lesson moves
Ways to Teach It
Darken the room, shine a flashlight on a rotating globe, and mark one sticky note location as it moves into light and darkness.
Ask students to write: Why does the Sun seem to cross the sky even though Earth is the object rotating?
Give pairs morning, noon, evening, and night sky cards to sequence, then match each change to Earth's rotation.
Measure a flagpole's shadow in the morning and afternoon, then connect the change to the Sun's apparent motion.
