What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify that daytime comes before nighttime, and nighttime comes before daytime. They place pictures of the sky in the correct repeating order.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can arrange several sun and moon cards in an alternating sequence. The student can name what comes next and explain the choice.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think daytime and nighttime happen randomly or only once. They may also connect nighttime only with bedtime rather than changes in the sky.
How to Assess It
- Give each student four picture cards showing day, night, day, and a blank. Ask the student to draw what comes next and explain why.

Ways to Teach It
Have students arrange sun and moon picture cards into a repeating sequence, then add the next two cards.
Ask, “What do you see outside during the day and at night?” Record answers on a two-column chart.
Play a movement game where students stand for day, crouch for night, and continue the teacher’s repeating call.
Keep a class sky log by drawing the sky at morning arrival and discussing what will follow later.
