What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students track recognizable star patterns and compare their positions over several nights. They also compare seasonal sky maps to identify patterns visible during different parts of the year.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students recognize the same star pattern after it has shifted or rotated across a sky map. They can explain that some patterns are visible in one season but not another.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think stars change their arrangement as they move across the sky. They may also believe every star pattern is visible every night of the year.

How to Assess It

Give students two rotated star maps and two seasonal sky maps. Ask them to circle one unchanged pattern and name one seasonal difference.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Arrange star stickers on a clear plastic bowl, then rotate it to show a pattern shifting across the sky without changing shape.

  2. Students compare two seasonal sky maps and write which star patterns appear in only one map, citing visible evidence.

  3. Play a matching game where students pair rotated constellation cards, then sort cards by the season when each pattern is visible.

  4. Use a planetarium app to compare the local sky at the same time tonight, three months later, and six months later.
